COUNTING MY BLESSINGS FROM 2018
The arrival of a new year inspires many people to set goals and make resolutions. I’m the same way, but I go about things a little differently. Every December for the past 15–20 years, I’ve taken time to reflect on the previous year before looking ahead to the next. I’ve found this process puts me in a great headspace to approach the future with gratitude, excitement, and optimism. As I sat down to reflect on 2018, I recognized that I have a lot of blessings to count. It was an amazing year at the practice and at home, so I have even more than usual to be grateful for. While compiling my list, I was overwhelmed with the feeling that I’m one lucky dentist. In an effort to share my blessings with the world, I wanted to include a list of some of the people and things that had the biggest impact on me over the past 12 months.
Working alongside our team is a privilege I get to experience every day. Each member is motivated
to work hard and provide our patients with a WOW experience every visit. I’ve also had the chance to watch our staff grow, improve, and take on new challenges. Nobody here has a “not my job” attitude. Everyone pitches in to help accomplish our goals. I have the particular joy of working alongside my son, a pleasure most people never get to experience. Finally, I’m thankful that everyone on our staff is okay with having a perfectionist as a boss. I know that’s not always easy, and I appreciate all of you more than I can say.
While the team is the most important factor in creating a great patient experience, our office plays a big role as well. We have a state-of-the-art facility designed for efficient workflow and patient comfort. We’re able to offer a wide variety of services and treatments under one roof, giving our patients access to everything they need to love their smiles. We live in a time that offers amazing materials, allowing us to provide excellent cosmetic dentistry and very durable dentistry — some of the most rewarding treatments we can offer. Having the tools and technology to be able to help our patients in the best way possible is certainly a blessing worth celebrating.
MY HEALTH AND FAMILY
After neck issues and a surgery to correct them, I’ve realized more than ever that you can’t take your health for granted. I’m feeling much better now, but I’m mindful of my neurosurgeon’s advice to limit the time I spend looking in people’s mouths. It’s a tough adjustment, but I’m working through it while still devoting as much time as possible to doing what I love.
I also cherish every moment I spend with my wife, Connie. We enjoy traveling, but we love the feeling of returning to western Maryland just as much. Home, after all, is where we get to spend time with our three grandchildren.
I remember my parents talking about how wonderful grandchildren are, and now I totally understand what they mean.
Finally, I would be remiss not to close with my deepest thanks to you, our wonderful patients. You are the people who make everything at Hagerstown Smiles possible. Working with patients to provide the best care possible without causing undue financial strain is the greatest part of my job. I mean it when I say we have the best patients in the world!
Here’s wishing everyone a 2019 full of wonder and blessings.
